Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Aventador S
July 21, 2022The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Aventador S and the Excalibur Essenza SCV12 are two new models, made in collaboration with Lamborghini. Both models feature inclined double sprung balances, set at 45°, linked with a differential. This mitigates the adverse effects of gravity, conferring superior precision.
As a former marketing professional, I incessantly appraise the strategies employed by watch companies. It is no accident that luxury brands choose to align themselves with non-competing luxury marques. Breitling works with Bentley, Porsche has collaborated with Chopard on different models, Mercedes-Benz has close ties with IWC and Lamborghini enjoys an alliance with Roger Dubuis.
If we take the latter partnership as an example, there are several opportunities to collaborate beyond merely dual branding of products or sponsoring the car brand’s race team. For example, two companies operating in two different fields may be able to share know-how regarding materials and manufacturing techniques. Indeed, the term ‘technology transfer’ seems most apt.
However, perhaps the most interesting benefit for both brands is the opportunity to cross-fertilise customers. Indeed, a person willing to part with a six-figure sum on a high-performance car may well be interested in spending a six-figure sum on a watch. I suspect both brand’s respective clients will be invited to a luxurious experience where they are exposed to both supercars and haute horlogerie in one location.
The Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Aventador S is a new creation from the Geneva-based watch brand and was developed in partnership with Lamborghini Squadra Corse. It is housed in a 45mm case and has an openworked dial formed of C-SMC carbon. Strut bars span the model’s structure, augmenting rigidity.
Inclined double sprung balances, set at 45°, are linked with a differential. This combination mitigates the adverse influence of gravity, aiding precision. The watch features a dead-beat seconds, further heightening the complexity of the movement.
Despite the movement being overtly modern, with its NAC treated plates and bridges, it also upholds traditional watchmaking practises, including ‘Poinçon de Genève finishings’.
The strap features an Alcantara inlay, a material that can be specified for the Lamborghini Avantador S, further reinforcing the links between the watch and the model it references with its name.
The Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 is a fire-breathing track car. Its 6.5 litre V12 engine delivers 830 PS and will accelerate to an undisclosed top speed. Sharing a close likeness to the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Aventador S, the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Essenza SCV12 supplants the red tones of the former model in preference for lime green accents. This latter hue is employed on the aformentioned track car. One of the delightful details on the watch relates to the openworked barrel cover. It features a spoke design similar to that of a Lamborghini wheel rim and affords views of the mainspring in various states of tension.
Roger Dubuis has also looked closely at Lamborghini’s ‘Ad personam’ programme. This service provides prospective purchasers with the opportunity to personalise their car, potentially making it unique as a result, the famous practitioner of haute horlogerie has now unveiled its own personalisation service named ‘Rarities’, allowing clients to explore their creativity and configure their ideal bespoke creation. Clearly, there is more to this partnership than just a few well-placed logos. The two firms have repeatedly shown they share ideas for the mutual benefit of both firms and, more crucially, the benefit of each firm’s clients.
Excess is the norm at Roger Dubuis, firmly focused on a vision of the world that is based on a philosophy of living larger than life. Stirred although in no way submissive to the past, the brand that dares to be different nonetheless maintains a resolute eye on the future. In addition to these drivers, thanks to the support of an integrated Manufacture from its very beginnings, Roger Dubuis’ unparalleled technical expertise is seamlessly blended with its unleashed creativity. Thus inspired by visionary engineers, and crafted by incredible watchmakers, the timepieces resulting from this sometimes diabolical duality are unquestionable proof that Roger Dubuis is without a doubt the most exciting way to experience Hyper Horology.
Roger Dubuis also draws on cutting-edge industries that share the same values. In recent years, this has given birth to an iconic alliance with Italian legend Lamborghini Squadra Corse. Channelling unreasonable sensations and exceptional power, the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Aventador S was the first horological expression of this high-speed partnership to hit the track and the Manufacture is gearing up to introduce a new black-and-red version.
Living up to the “Powered by Raging Mechanics” signature, and fuelled by a shared flair for technological complexity, the Excalibur Aventador S is impelled by an ‘engine’ in the shape of the specially developed Duotor calibre. Duly protected by five patents, the Lamborghini-exclusive Roger Dubuis movement embodies an ongoing evolution of the Maison’s expertise, entirely reinterpreted in light of this automobile alliance. The Excalibur Aventador S features a range of easily identifiable design elements drawn directly from its motorised alter ego, complete with two sprung balances inclined at 45 degrees, strut bars, a power reserve with racing codes and an Alcantara strap.
On July 29th, Lamborghini Squadra Corse and Roger Dubuis will showcase their resolutely future-driven approach by simultaneously unveiling an amazing hypercar and the hyperwatch inspired by their adrenaline-fuelled partnership. Lamborghini’s freshly evolved SCV12 is the first limited-edition V12 engine-based hypercar for track only, specially boosted for Super Trofeo races and the most powerful ever made by Lamborghini. It has the capacity to exceed 830 hp thanks to aerodynamic supercharging at high speed, along with higher downforce levels than a GT3 car and unprecedented aerodynamic efficiency. In creating the new Excalibur Essenza SCV12, Roger Dubuis has likewise evolved its Duotor, stripping it down to essentials to enhance performance, while harmonising the design codes shared by the timepiece and the fearsome speed machine. Freed from its upper bridge and reworked in skeleton flying mode shaped like the wheel-rim of the Lamborghini Essenza SCV12, the barrel can be viewed from the top as if one were peering through a transparent supercar hood. The strut bars on the top of the calibre remain a signature feature of Excalibur Lamborghini-inspired models.
Like Roger Dubuis Lamborghini, which is renowned for customised supercars based on its famous “Ad personam” programme, Roger Dubuis aficionados can enjoy the same level of service through the exclusive “Rarities” programme offered by the Geneva-based Manufacture. The ultimate expression of individual creativity, this concept takes the term “bespoke” into a whole new dimension of hyper personalisation. It will enable each lucky owner to enjoy the thrill of co-creating and owning a truly one-of-a-kind version of the Excalibur Essenza SCV12.
